Canoe Route Maps
Since 2005, Barry Simon has worked tirelessly with "Uncle" Phil to develop individual canoe route maps that record the data collected during The Wabakimi Project reconnaissance trips. To date, he has produced over 50 maps and continues to develop new maps in anticipation of future exploratory expeditions.
Each route map is produced digitally in full colour on 8.5" x 11.0" high-gloss paper to depict canoe route values such as the locations of campsites and portages. Accurately measured portage lengths are expressed in metres to make them compatible with topo maps. Locations of outpost camps and lodges are included where assistance may be obtained should an emergency arise. A descriptive title indicates the extent of the map coverage and the direction of flow of the main intervening waterway (eg., Davies Lake to Ahleen Lake via Burntrock Lake).
Barry's maps are uniform in scale and each overlaps adjoining maps for seamless coverage of a canoe route. Enlargement circles provide magnified details of portages as well as hazards or obstacles such as swifts, rapids and waterfalls.
As they become available, canoe route maps will be sold separately or bound in a collection according to their geographic location in a particular watershed. The first volume, covering the Ogoki River and its northern tributaries, will be available in the Fall of 2008. Future volumes will be announced on this website as they become available.
Wabakimi Canoe Route Maps--Volume One, which will include 17 route maps as well as information about the park, will retail for $35.00Cdn but may be ordered on-line for $30.00Cdn. Individual route maps will be $3.00Cdn (minimum order: 5 maps) and may be ordered on-line.
